Field Marshal, a ceremonial five-star position granted only in extraordinary situations for outstanding combat leadership, is the highest rank in the Indian Army.
Only two people in Indian history have been granted this honorary, lifelong rank: Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in 1973 and Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa in 1986.
