Manchester United are preparing for a major midfield overhaul next summer, and that could see club captain Bruno Fernandes leave Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder, who joined United from Sporting CP in 2021, has been a central figure in the squad for years, but doubts remain about his long-term fit under manager Ruben Amorim.

Reports suggest Fernandes could depart at the end of the season, with Saudi Arabian clubs maintaining strong interest in his signature. While no deal materialised this summer, insider Ben Jacobs revealed that Fernandes’ potential exit may play a key role in funding United’s transfer business in 2025.

Amorim’s system has placed Fernandes in a deeper role as part of a double pivot, which has highlighted his attacking instincts but also exposed defensive weaknesses in United’s midfield. Opponents such as Arsenal, Fulham, and Burnley have found joy exploiting the gaps in central areas, showing the urgent need for reinforcements.

Among the names high on Amorim’s wishlist are Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, and Elliot Anderson. Baleba, currently impressing in the Premier League, brings physicality and progressive passing, while Wharton has earned a reputation as a midfield conductor at Crystal Palace. Anderson, though not as specialised, offers balance and reliability as a box-to-box option.

The statistics underline their value. Wharton leads the pack in progressive passes per 90 with 7.33, while Baleba excels defensively with 125 tackles and interceptions. Anderson, meanwhile, has contributed the most key passes with 37, highlighting his creative influence.

With United already adding firepower in attack through the signings of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, the focus is now firmly on solving midfield frailties. If Fernandes does leave, his departure could open the door to a long-overdue rebuild that finally equips United to compete with Europe’s elite.
