With Sanwo-Olu not present, Tinubu sends a strong warning to LASG about unapproved constructions in Lagos.

 

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday issued a stern warning regarding unauthorized developments in Lagos, directly addressing the state's deputy governor, Femi Hamzat, in the absence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

This development comes amidst swirling rumors of a growing rift between the president and the Lagos State Governor, further fueled by Sanwo-Olu's conspicuous absence from a major infrastructure flag-off event.

The occasion was the official commencement of the reconstruction of the deep seaport access road in Epe, Ijebu-Ode. While several dignitaries, including Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, were in attendance, Governor Sanwo-Olu's designated seat remained empty, with his deputy occupying a position behind it.

During his address, President Tinubu notably directed his remarks towards Hamzat, cautioning governors against granting planning approvals for illegal islands and constructions that encroach on designated road setbacks and maritime zones.

The President stated, "Please, our dear governors, let’s work together. Don’t give planning approvals without collaborating with the surveyor-general of the federation and the ministry of works on these roads."

"I’m glad the deputy governor of Lagos State is here. Take it that we will revoke all those approvals given on setbacks, and please note that we are very serious about it. No more approvals for those unapproved islands being created illegally," he warned.

While no official reason has been provided for Sanwo-Olu's absence, speculation points to an ongoing disagreement with the President. This suspicion gained traction last Saturday when President Tinubu seemingly snubbed Governor Sanwo-Olu during the inauguration of a section of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. During that event, Tinubu was observed shaking hands with various dignitaries but bypassed Sanwo-Olu to greet Kogi State Governor Ahmed Ododo, who was next in line.

The alleged friction between the two political figures is believed by some to be linked to the recent impeachment and subsequent reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
