Rivers: The Governor's Suspension Is Not Because They Want Peace—Alaye Theophilus

 During an interview with Channels TV, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, national president of the IYC, indicated that the governor's suspension and proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State were not driven by a desire for stability or peace in the state.

According to him, they are pursuing Rivers State's resources and how they can use those funds to finance their campaign and the 2027 election.

Alaye clarified that the beauty of democracy is that in order to ensure checks and balances, the legislative and executive branches must be at odds with one another.

He stressed that since the legislature was chosen by the people to restrain the executive's excesses, it is to be expected that the legislative and executive branches will occasionally clash.

Alaye asserted that when this happened in Rivers State, a state of emergency shouldn't have been declared.

In his words, "The reason why Rivers State was declared a state of emergency and the governor suspended is not because they want peace or stability in Rivers State."

"What they are after is the resources of Rivers State and how they can use Rivers State funds to campaign and fund themselves for the 2027 election."

The beauty of democracy is that the executive and the legislative arms must be at loggerheads so that there will be checks and balances. I don't understand why an administration will be asking for a cordial relationship between the legislative arm and the executive arm."

"The people elected the legislators to checkmate the excesses of the executive, so it is expected that sometimes in democracy, the legislative arm and the executive must be at loggerheads. And that happened in Rivers State, and a state of emergency was declared."
