The ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shows no signs of resolution, with sources claiming that a covert deal between President Bola Tinubu and several PDP governors is at the heart of the turmoil.
According to an insider, a “gentleman’s pact” has been struck between President Tinubu and some first-term PDP governors, which guarantees their support for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. In exchange, Tinubu is said to be offering backing for their re-election campaigns. The pact reportedly allows the governors to remain in the PDP while supporting the president’s second term, without the need to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recent comments from Akwa Ibom State Governor, who publicly expressed his support for Tinubu’s second term, are seen as evidence of this alleged deal. Despite these claims, an APC chieftain has dismissed the notion, calling it unfounded speculation.
Further fueling the tensions, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has emerged as a key figure in solidifying Tinubu’s influence within the PDP. Wike’s alliance with Tinubu has reportedly influenced several other PDP governors, including those from Plateau, Adamawa, and Oyo, to align with the president. Wike is also believed to be behind the ongoing dispute over the PDP’s national secretary position, which has intensified internal party divisions.
The dispute is compounded by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed’s vocal opposition to supporting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, especially after Atiku’s alleged backing of the APC candidate in the last Bauchi governorship election. Despite this, sources suggest that even if internal tensions persist, the PDP’s struggles will not significantly undermine Tinubu’s path to re-election.

Historical trends show that no political party has won the presidency without defections and realignments, and Tinubu’s strategic maneuvering is believed to be consolidating his power ahead of the 2027 election. As the PDP wrestles with its internal crisis, the party’s ability to present a unified front against the APC remains uncertain. For now, the leadership struggles and shifting alliances are seen as advantageous to Tinubu’s re-election efforts.
