I would respect the coach's opinion. Wojciech Szczesny is prepared to move aside for Marc-André ter Stegen in the Champions League for Barcelona.

 Wojciech Szczesny still hasn’t lost a single game as Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper, and it’s hard to name any shot-stopper playing at a higher level than the Pole right now. Still there is a large shadow looming over Szczesny, and he’s fully aware.

The goalkeeper spoke to the press on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund and was asked about the possibility of being replaced by Marc-André ter Stegen, who is back in training and could be medically cleared in time for a potential European semi-final and the Final if Barça get there.

Szczesny came out of retirement to replace Ter Stegen when the German suffered a serious knee injury back in September and is fully aware that he’s likely to be a backup once MATS is fully fit to play, and Tek says he’d accept Hansi Flick’s decision to bring Ter Stegen back into the team if the coach ever made that call.

The veteran was also asked about his future with reports claiming he’s willing to sign a new deal for next season, but Szczesny is focusing on the near future and the games he still has to play between now and the end of May.

“I’m here to replace Marc, but I obviously want to play in this competition, but I would respect the coach’s opinion if he decided to change.

“Marc is at a very high level, and there’s no point in making comparisons. He’s returning to training after a very serious injury, and the truth is that when he’s fully recovered, there won’t be many goalkeepers at his level.

“[On his future] It’s not something I’m thinking about too much. I have a contract until the end of the season and I want to focus on the games. I don’t want to waste energy on contract issues or my future. I want to give my best to the club.”

The Champions League rules state that Szczesny would no longer be able to play in the competition if Ter Stegen was named in the squad again before the end of this season, so Flick must be 100% sure that Ter Stegen will be a better goalkeeper than Tek for such big stages as the semis and a potential title game.
